SUMMER AT THE COTTAGE
Summer sells itself, but if you need any persuasion, here's some inspiration!
SUNNY & SANDY SUMMER
If you're lucky enough to snag some dates in peak season, countless adventures await!
JORDAN LAKE
The cottage sits directly on this beautiful all-sports lake, at the north end, where the seaweed is minimal, and the bottom, quite sandy. Swim from the private dock, stepping down the ladder into waist level water, which gradually tapers to deep, or at the public beach, a mere minute away. Or venture farther out into the lake's 430 acres via the cottage watercraft--kayaks, paddle boards, and paddle boat--or by pontoon rental through a local outfitter.
TUPPER LAKE
Here in Lake Odessa, it's a twofer, as a winding canal connects Jordan to Tupper. The canal is a destination in and of itself, as you pass under bridges and spy wildlife. Deer forage in the woods, turtles sunbathe on logs, and kingfishers hunt at the water's edge. When you reach Tupper, head towards the smattering of cottages lining the shore, and you'll soon hit the sand bar, the perfect spot to take in the beauty of this smaller, more tranquil lake.
ICE CREAM
Dairy Queen is kitty corner to the beach, just steps away from the cottage. If you're in Ionia, head to the Udder Store to savor locally made Mooville ice cream and to purchase ice cream cakes and homemade take-n-bake meals from their freezer cases. Or visit sister owned Pinterest perfect Cook & Co. Creamery, whose antique store front is pure eye candy, just as sweet as their gourmet ice cream, homemade brownies, and homespun cotton candy.
U-PICK AT HANULCIK
Few experiences are more pure Michigan than plucking ripe fruit from trees and bushes, and the locals know just where to go, Hanulcik's Farm Market & Orchard, just under a half hour from the cottage. Strawberries hit first, followed by peaches, raspberries, nectarines, pears, and, surprise, already in August, apples. Looking to indulge without any labor? Their fruit is also available on their market shelves, fresh picked, and in homemade desserts.
BLUEBERRY PICKING
The name, Bill's Blueberries on Campground Road, is unassuming, and the handmade signs and two track drive, rustic. But the owners are true blueberry connoisseurs, and their bushes are massive and heavy laden with fruit, and stretch row after row after row across the field. The season gets underway towards the end of July and halts in the first days of September. Hit up Cotant's Market, just 2 minutes away, for local goodies, before heading back.
